San Juan is home to some of the friendliest people you will meet in the Caribbean who take great pride in their Puerto Rican heritage. A heritage rooted in Spanish culture dating back to the 1500′s. This culture has led to some amazing places to eat and stay in San Juan. The following are three of those places that can make any traveller fall in love with San Juan.
Hotel El Convento
Tucked away in the heart of Old San Juan is one of the best hotels in the Caribbean. The Hotel El Convento is a small luxury boutique hotel built in a former Spanish convent and features world class service and old world charm. You can grab a free glass of wine at the daily manager reception or take a dip in the plunge pool overlooking the San Juan Cathedral. The hotel doesn’t come cheap but deals can occasionally be found in the off season. The hotel is a popular spot for weddings and those looking for a romantic stay before boarding one of the many cruises from San Juan.
Pina Coladas
What we know is, San Juan is the birthplace of the pina colada. What we aren’t quite sure of is which bar it was originally concocted. Two bars claim to be the rightful birthplace of the pina coloada. Both the Caribe Hilton Beachcomber Bar and Barrachina claim to be the original creators and debates can get downright spirited (no pun intended). Since there may be no way to know for sure you are better off just trying them both.
La Bombonera
Ham and cheese breakfast sandwiches coated with powdered sugar may not sound good at first, but one taste of the mallorcas served at La Bombonera and you will be hooked. This famous eatery in Old San Juan has been serving up mallorcas, fresh squeezed orange juice and the best cafe con leche you will ever have for over 100 years. La Bombonera wasn’t built for tourist and in fact would probably be considered more of a locals spot. In other words don’t expect anything fancy and be prepared to wait a bit for a table. Don’t let that stop you though because it is worth the wait.
